the gardens

In an attempt to escape the cold, I visited my local botanical gardens armed with my new Kodak Portra 400 NC film.  I wish someone had taken a photo of me manually focusing while holding a baby and running after a 4 year old!

It really is true about the quality of film (and also the fact that I am more comfortable with my light meter) – these film shots captured my heart.  More soon….

Felicia - February 23, 2011 - 5:12 pm

orchids are possibly my favorite flowers. they remind me of my grandfather who brought a bunch of orchids from taiwan to our home in the u.s.

Lucent Imagery - February 23, 2011 - 6:46 pm

Oh my gosh, thanks for the dreamy virtual escape! I want to sneak under that magic archway. And you are a super mama, taking such gorgeous photos with two kids!

sunday brunch

Things are looking up this week! We enjoyed Sunday brunch as a family and both girls are feeling better.  I might be able to actually get some sleep!

All images taken with my Pentax – the only camera I carried with me this weekend ~ oh, how I love that.

Shokoofeh - February 21, 2011 - 8:06 am

Giving thanks this week, even though things didn’t go as planned.  My girls are sick, and I have spent my days and nights comforting, rocking, and wiping away tears.  Looking forward to working on a few things this weekend, with my camera in hand!

I do have a few links for you that I have enjoyed recently ~

ready for spring

I am definitely ready for spring.  This winter has been long and cold.  I’ve settled on wearing my florals – layered of course, to keep me warm!

Karin van D. - February 15, 2011 - 12:40 pm

Haha, I also put on some summer dresses the last couple of weeks. With thick fluffly sweaters on top, ofcourse, but still. It felt a bit like rebellion against winter :-)

Lucent Imagery - February 15, 2011 - 8:55 pm

I am preparing the opposite! Starting to buy some jumpers, dark floral prints etc as we come out of an intense destructive summer towards autumn.

Lindsay {Shrimp} - February 16, 2011 - 10:11 pm

It suddenly hit 62 degrees here today out of the blue, and I dressed like it was 80 because I got too excited – totally overboard! That’s a beautiful top!

mornings

Every morning, I try to slip out of bed a bit earlier than everyone else.  It’s the only time of the day that I truly have to myself.

I enjoy the quiet, and I love to immerse myself  in my own thoughts for the day….

Elisabelle - February 14, 2011 - 9:35 am

oh yes that’s a lovely moment! but i love to sleep too;)

Lucent Imagery - February 15, 2011 - 8:54 pm

There are some beautiful moments to be had in the quiet of the mornings. I love seeing the sun shining through different parts of my home and making rainbows as it bounces off a crystal in the window. Your photos have a lovely light.

chasity - February 16, 2011 - 8:55 am

i cherish these quiet moments as well.

what a happy bowl to start the day with :)

weekend thoughts

I have to admit that I am picking up my film camera more than my digital these days.  And I’m truly loving it…..

I’ve included the last photo to show you how many of my photos are taken.   With my baby in my lap or on my hip.  And I wouldn’t have it any other way!

I just want to thank you for your visits this week.  I truly appreciate your comments and emails ~

Have a wonderful weekend.

Kristina - February 11, 2011 - 7:58 am

Loving your pictures as always. The golden mirror in the last one is beautiful!!
Have a nice weekend, Kristina

Shirley - February 11, 2011 - 8:48 am

Film does give the loveliest hues at times doesn’t it? Beautiful post =)

stacie - February 11, 2011 - 11:03 am

really beautiful way of looking at the world…i love the baby jars!!

Whitnee Jenkins - February 11, 2011 - 1:51 pm

I love that last one!

Lucent Imagery - February 11, 2011 - 4:30 pm

Ha, I love that you’re taking photos with bubs in your lap or carried on front. The question is… how long until bubs wants to start taking photos with that “thingy mummy is playing with”? A future photographer perhaps? Either way, I think your children will have such positive childhood memories of a mother who paused to notice the beautiful things in life. What a precious gift you are imparting.

Elisabelle - February 14, 2011 - 9:37 am

such lovely photos!!!

my digital camera feels abandoned but i have a love story going on with film.

Alisha Stamper | Photographer - February 21, 2011 - 12:28 am

I LOVE seeing your little baby with you for pictures. I wear my little girl on my back in an ergo while photographing ALLLLLL the time. I’m in the studio, large format film. Glad to see you’re doing film too, its so fabulous, isn’t it!? Focusing on seeing the here and now instead of the what just happened. cheers!

kim kath - February 27, 2011 - 8:24 pm

i love this little glimpse of your new baby love that you shoot with her in tow

Katyha - March 3, 2011 - 4:42 am

that last photo is amazing love, love, love it!

lunch with my girl

I spent quality time with my girl.

Out for lunch – just us.

I can’t believe I’m holding a conversation with someone who, just a few years ago, I literally held in my arms.

She is a great kid – strong willed, opinionated, and full of smiles.

And she loves “cheese soup”.

Definitely one of my favorite lunch dates.

Sharon - February 9, 2011 - 6:27 am

I love lunch dates with my daughter too! They are such special days and well worth documenting : )

Lunch looks delish!

A. Jarrett - February 9, 2011 - 7:59 am

Thanks, Sharon! Yes, and I look forward to these lunch dates as she gets older!

Alice - February 9, 2011 - 9:07 am

aw i love simple lunches of pressed sandwiches and soup.

sounds like a really special time with your daughter :)

mary - February 9, 2011 - 10:35 am

I love this – how sweet! :)

And something about the colors, the tones in these images…I just love them!

Lucent Imagery - February 9, 2011 - 5:35 pm

All my life, from a young age I have adored lunches with my Mum. I still do. It’s such a precious relationship. She will grow up loving them too, I’m sure.

Georgianna - February 10, 2011 - 12:50 am

Oh, she’s becoming quite a little lady already! I can’t believe it either. What precious time to share together. xo

melinda ke - February 10, 2011 - 5:42 pm

How sweet! I look forward to adopting a little girl in the next few years and I hope we have lots of special days like this. :)

Daniella - November 15, 2011 - 4:16 pm

Aw, very cute. I’m totally interested in that cheese soup! lol.. is it a broccoli soup?

A. Jarrett - November 15, 2011 - 8:36 pm

Yes, Danielle – it’s broccoli cheese soup!

the perfect package

A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon this original gouache and watercolor painting of a Pentax K1000 on etsy, and I immediately fell in love.  I had recently received my own Pentax film camera, and I knew that I would love to have this small painting on display in my (future) studio. Right now, my quiet corner will have to do!

Tim & Tara, a husband and wife team, have a gorgeous etsy shop filled with Tim’s paintings and Tara’s photography.  I loved how the art was packaged so beautifully, the attention to detail so evident.  Most of all, I love the painting itself.

And an even bigger bonus – Tara included one of her original polaroids of summer berries.  And oh, how I love polaroids……

It was, quite simply, the perfect package.

Alice - February 8, 2011 - 9:46 am

so impeccably packed! and wow, an original polaroid is quite the bonus!! it’s so so hard to part with the originals…

tracey k in ohio - February 8, 2011 - 2:12 pm

Don’t you just love finding ‘connections’ like that? You have a Pentax, then you find a piece of art of a Pentax; you love polaroids – you receive one. Tiny treasures like those make my days! :-)

Shokoofeh - February 8, 2011 - 3:50 pm

It’s such a lovely package. I am a big fan of Tara’s blog so now I really know how happy that package is. :)

Have a beautiful day xo

Sharon - February 8, 2011 - 7:37 pm

Don’t you just love when people put a little extra effort into the details? It really makes your day! When I ordered a necklace from Lisa Leonard she did the same thing. Like you, I photographed the packaging!

I want a quiet corner!

Karleen - February 8, 2011 - 11:04 pm

i agree- beautifully packaged! love the simple design of the painting! i think it’ll look fabulous in your quiet corner/future studio :)

Lucent Imagery - February 8, 2011 - 11:34 pm

I agree, what a perfect little package. Even better for the surprise inclusion of the polaroid. You are a worthy recipient of such valuable little snippets of life as a gift.

Katyha - February 9, 2011 - 4:31 am

so gorgeous!

A. Jarrett - February 9, 2011 - 8:01 am

Alice – I totally agree, the originals are so hard to part with. That is exactly why I will treasure this one!

Tracey – Thanks for pointing out the “connections” – love that perspective.

Thanks for all of your kind words~

Tim - February 22, 2011 - 2:19 pm

Those Thayers are awesome, aren’t they?

A. Jarrett - February 22, 2011 - 4:59 pm

They definitely are, Tim.

tulips and afternoon light

I feel that shooting with film definitely gets to the core of my theme of simplicity for this year.  Love the grain, love the light, no post processing required.

rome

{Rome, September 2009}

My husband and I had just stepped off of the Roma Termini and I was so in love with this scene, that I whipped out my polaroid land camera and pressed the shutter.  My heart sank as I realized that there were people at the bottom of the scene.

But I find that, as with a number of images I take, it has to marinate for a while.  I might not like it at the time, but after a while, it grows on me.  And that is exactly what happened here.  Does that ever happen to you?

I now love this polaroid shot, and I think that the people I captured add to the entire scene, the mood, the moment.  Exactly as I remember it.

Sharon - February 2, 2011 - 8:37 am

It looks like it could have been taken 30-40 years ago! And yes, I think the people in the photo add personality and life. I have to keep telling myself that about my own photos too.

christine - February 2, 2011 - 11:57 am

having a few heads in the picture also add perspective – helping the viewer determine distance! weather (no winter hats on these people)! and energy to the scene (lots of activity)…
just looking at your posted pic reminds me to be gentle when I crop my pictures! maybe I am too focused on the closeness & clarity of the object… & missing the story!

Whitnee Jenkins - February 2, 2011 - 2:45 pm

this always happens to me. always!

Georgianna - February 2, 2011 - 7:16 pm

Wonderful image, A, and much more interesting with the heads! Yes, I do find that some images need time to marinate – perfect term! At the time I take them, I might be disappointed as I imagined something else but coming back months or years later, I can more easily see the merits and am often pleased and satisfied that it did, after all, capture my intention. hugs, xo – g

Lucent Imagery - February 3, 2011 - 11:40 pm

I love Christine’s comment. And your term “marinate”. It’s perfect! I’ve also looked back on older pictures when my skills or camera equipment wasn’t as good and had to learn to love them as they are and for the journey they represent to me about my photography. Have a lovely weekend. xx

agrippina maior - February 4, 2011 - 4:30 am

it’s funny, i didn’t even notice the people. just the light on those buildings of one of my favourite cities.

later, seeing the people there however, i thought they looked just perfect.

i spent my first trip as an adult to europe trying to avoid people in my shots. but now? people and their interactions with their built environment is what it’s all about for me :-)

Just beautiful!

Trix - February 28, 2011 - 10:50 pm

I know what you mean, some of the photos I take do grow on me, especially the ones I take on impulse. And I think having people in the frame makes the picture more interesting!

wooden spoons

I recently found the perfect little wooden spoons for my coffee and tea.  I think they will be perfect for spreading preserves as well.

Can’t wait to use them!

Alice - February 1, 2011 - 10:55 am

ooh i would love a set of wooden spoons like this! rustic charm, hello.

mary - February 1, 2011 - 7:29 pm

I *love* these!! Lucky you. :)

christina - February 1, 2011 - 9:41 pm

i would love to add these to my collection. did you find them online?

oh your blog has made me smile so very much. it really has. ; )
XO

Jan's camera - February 2, 2011 - 7:33 pm

Lovely. How do you manage to make ordinary items into works of art? I love those spoons.

A. Jarrett - February 2, 2011 - 9:39 pm

Truly appreciate all of your kind words!

Christina, I found these in store at Anthropologie – not sure if they are online!

Annie - February 3, 2011 - 10:47 pm

i love this shot! beautiful light :D

simplicity

As January draws to a close, I realize what a long but wonderful month it has been.  Cold, yes – but that just gives us an excuse to snuggle under blankets, sleep in just a little longer, and keep fuzzy socks on small toes.  January is always like a clean slate for me, the first month of a new year.

I’ve done a great deal of reflecting this month, and I have finally decided on my word for 2011.

Simplicity.

Simplicity in my life, my thoughts, my actions, and most notably – my photography.  I am keeping things simple in 2011……

Elisabelle - January 31, 2011 - 6:31 am

simplicity is a wonderful word!

Karleen - January 31, 2011 - 3:02 pm

i absolutely *adore* your style. simplicity is the perfect word for your work. btw, i got your calendar – gorgeous images!!

Lucent Imagery - January 31, 2011 - 5:11 pm

Wonderful word! It became my word back in 2004 and it has stayed with me ever since. Even with the addition of new ones, it still rings very true and powerfully to me. Enjoy your simplicity. x

Sharon - January 31, 2011 - 9:06 pm

That sounds like a good word for me too! Your images are simple but oh so lovely.

I, too, have adopted this word as a mantra and way of life. I phrase it differently, however: “Pack Light.”

Your blog is so inspiring.

Keep up the creative way in which you spread joy and peace in this insane world.
