on raising sisters

Film. Kodak Portra 400.

I’m an only child.  I’m the oldest, youngest, middle child – all in one.  I don’t know what it’s like to have a sister.  But as fate would have it, I am a mother to sisters.

I don’t quite know what it’s like to have a little sister who wants to be just like me and do everything that I’m doing.  And I don’t know what it’s like to have an older sister to show me things and look after me.

I’d like to think that I’m creating memories for them.  That one day they’ll sit together over coffee and share a laugh about how their mother took photos of random, everyday things, made them share a room longer than necessary, kiss and make up even when they didn’t want to, hold hands when they walked down the stairs, and wipe away each others tears only because this is what I believe sisters ought to do.

And if this were to happen, I would consider my job well done.

It is so exciting, isn’t it? Watching your kids interact in a way you haven’t experienced…ReplyCancel
