One of the aspects of film I enjoy the most is the ability to shoot with a different film types and feel like I have a camera.

You would be amazed at how excited I am to get my hands on new-to-me film, load it in my camera, and shoot away happily – simply imagining the goodness that is captured.

As is the case with Fuji Neopan 400 black and white film – I love the grain in these captures.

These images also hold another first for me – they were processed and scanned by Richard’s Photo Lab.  I’ve always used local photography labs to develop my film.  This was the first time that I actually dropped film in the mail.  I must admit that I am amazed at the results.  It has proven to me that where you process your film makes a huge difference.

I don’t know much about film photography (I so wish to experience film someday), but the balance of light and shadow in these photos is really something and those grains, that softness somehow makes the moment/mood in them more tangible.
Jarrette, thank you very much for visiting twinklingmoments and for your encouraging words.ReplyCancel

I am completely smitten with these images. Wow, you really inspire me to consider film photography one day in the future.

  • Dottie - July 26, 2012 - 9:42 am

Beautiful! I have never used Fuji Neopan – such a Kodak girl – but now I’m interested. These are rich and creamy like Tmax (of course, your use of soft light makes a huge difference) while having a tiny more grain like Tri-X.

For developing, I’ve tried three mail-away and several local labs. Richard Photo is hands down the best; their work is near-perfect and I adjust the scans very little, if at all. The downsides are the cost (less expensive than my local pro lab, but much more expensive than the other mail-aways) and the wait time of up to four weeks. So I save RPL for very important film, such as weddings. I use North Coast Photo for second-level important film, such as vacation photos. Their enhanced scans are very nice, although I have to adjust color a bit. Most everything else goes to the local Ritz camera one-hour lab.

p.s. Nice to see your F100 come out to play. :)ReplyCancel

i adore all of these. you’ve got me absolutely itching to try some neopan now. and i know exactly that feeling you describe, because new film has so much potential, and you don’t know what’s going to come of it, but that’s pretty damn exhilarating. the tones and softness here are magic. there’s no way digital could ever live up to film, when film is done right.ReplyCancel

  • Justyna - August 26, 2012 - 2:26 pm

Oh stunning! I love neopan, it used to be my fav film back in the days, must repeat the experience. Thanks.ReplyCancel

Captures from my iPhone, lately.

All of these are included in my instagram feed (@thesweetlight) – which I find addictive, to say the least.   I am continuously amazed and inspired by the images on instagram – it encourages me to push my own limitations with the camera on my phone.

it’s so interesting because i’m fighting with the doubt of buying an iphone just because of that and all the other functionalities, but of course, instagram would be a major point. it’s harder to carry along my canon 5d markii with me, because it’s huge and i wanted something easier to connect with the world through my pictures, avoiding the usual process of cables, lightroom and publishing! let’s see! :)ReplyCancel

These are the last of my captures from Louisiana, all taken with my polaroid land camera.  I hope you have enjoyed these images!

I have been feeling a bit off creative wise.  But I am slowly finding my way back.  I know this is true for everyone who creates, regardless of your medium.  Setting my camera to side for a bit has definitely renewed my spirit.

  • Dottie - July 24, 2012 - 12:43 am

Gorgeous! This film and camera combination is great for the location. (The first photo is especially magical looking.) I assume it was a bright, sunny day and I like how Fuji FP 100 mutes the light and makes the result much less contrasty than it would be on, for example, Ektar 100 or Portra 160.

I’m glad to hear you are slowly finding your way back to your creativity. Sometimes laying down the camera for a while until you feel inspired is a great way to recharge.ReplyCancel

    • A. Jarrett - July 25, 2012 - 12:24 pm

@Dottie – you are so right – it was a bright, sunny day and the fuji fp 100c mutes the light perfectly.ReplyCancel

A few more Louisiana details.

These images remind me so much of my childhood, spent sitting on chairs like these on my grandmother’s porch.  She didn’t have air conditioning, and the porch was actually cooler than the house……

I’m just getting my film back from my trip home to Louisiana.  I made a point to capture the windows that spoke to me.  Windows dressed so simply, yet so profound.

I’ve been taking my time, lately.  Documenting here and there with my camera, but mostly living in the moment.  Experiencing without the need to click a shutter.  Surprisingly, I am enjoying that.

More, soon.

Spending some time in Louisiana (more images to come once film is developed + scanned).

And of course, coffee is first on my list of places to visit while I am home.

Imagine my surprise when I walked in and saw all of those cameras – heaven!   And the other nice touch – the owner’s photography is displayed on all of the walls.  Nothing like talking cameras over coffee, I could probably do that all day.

Loved this place, I’ll definitely be back.

On a side note, I’m really loving Fuji Pro 400H film these days.  I’ve overexposing by one stop, and I’m finding that makes a world of difference.

  • suzie - July 3, 2012 - 1:59 am

what a find! I’ve never tried Fuji Pro 400H (have they discontinued it?), but I do exactly the same with their Superia 400, and it’s so much better that way…trying to do the same with Kodak seems to just muck up the colours, I’ve found.ReplyCancel

  • sarah abraham - July 4, 2012 - 9:10 pm

i love all of these. i was discussing with someone today the menu i would have if i ever owned a coffee shop, and in the back of my mind i was also laying out plans for hanging my work, and other people’s work on the walls; how the windows would be perfect for optimal light; the coffee cups & china as photogenic as possible, the tables made out of some kind of rustic wood. it was a fun little daydream :) props to this owner for making it a reality.ReplyCancel

  • A. Jarrett - July 4, 2012 - 11:04 pm

@ suzie, glad to see I’m not the only one overexposing with Fuji film! And yes, Fuji still makes this film.

    @belinda – thank you!

@sarah – I think I have had that same dream as well! The pride and joy of this owner was so evident in every detail of his coffee shop….ReplyCancel

This is where the magic happens.

Where prints are scanned.

Where negatives are stored.

Where blog posts are written.

Where little steps toward big dreams are taken each day.
